The Mask Project // Paris Berlin Dedougou was created to initiate a new way of dealing with mask cultures. Concurrently with the FESTIMA, the International Mask Festival (Dédougou, Burkina Faso ), events will be held in Paris, Berlin and Dedougou to learn, share and take part in the construction of a new image of mask cultures.

The FESTIMA, held every other year in Dédougou is the largest worldwide event for African mask societies. During one week, 45 mask societies gather 850 artists from Burkina Faso, Benin, Côte d’ Ivoire, Gambia , Mali, Togo and Senegal.

This event is the opportunity for the Mask collective to meet these mask societies and understand the culture of the African mask. The events occuring during the FESTIMA will be broadcasted both in Paris and Berlin. Pictures, interviews, dances and events. For two days Paris and Berlin will follow the rhythm of African mask societies.

The Mask Project was created to investigate the place of mask in our societies. In museums, carnival, films, theater, nightmares, the mask is an important element of our culture. What are its roles? What does it represent? During the festival, speakers and artists will share their knowledge and practices of the mask.

The objective of the Mask Project is also to allow the public to become masks creators. Masks created during the workshops or received through the internet will be screened in the exhibition venues. Thus creating masks will be accessible to anyone, from Delhi to New York, from the recognized artist to the mere child : everyone can have their mask exhibited in Dedougou, Paris and Berlin!

Masks will also be exposed and worn. During the festival, dance performances, exhibitions of theater masks or works of contemporary artists will enrich the vision of the mask that we built with the artists that are interviewed .
